Akashi Blended Japanese and World Whisky Review

Finish: Medium, gently woody and mildly spicy.

Summary

Akashi Blended Sherry Cask Finish is a no-age-statement 40% ABV blend from Eigashima Shuzo, made for the European market. Around thirty percent is Eigashima’s own malt, the rest grain whisky; it is aged for at least three years in American oak and then finished for six months in sherry casks. It is a light, approachable blend with dried fruit, chocolate and caramel rather than a rich or smoky style, and it suits a highball.

Interesting Facts

  • Eigashima Shuzo received Japan’s first whisky licence in 1919, four years before the Yamazaki distillery was built.
  • The company has brewed sake in Akashi since 1679 and remains a sake brewer first.
  • This expression was created by owner and master blender Mikio Hiraishi.
