Inside the 12 Day American Whiskey Advent Calendar
This is the one to choose for a bourbon lover. Behind the twelve doors are eight bourbons, two rye whiskeys, a sour mash American whiskey and an American single malt. The line up includes Eagle Rare 10 Year Old, Weller Special Reserve, Four Roses, Heaven Hill 6 Year Old and Michter's.
Two of the bourbons are wheated, which means wheat takes the place of rye in the recipe and the whiskey tastes softer and sweeter. One is a high rye bourbon, which goes the other way and brings more spice. Tasting them over the same twelve days is the quickest way to find out which style you prefer.
Each bottle has a QR code. Scan it and you get a tasting video and written notes for that exact whiskey. If you want to see every name before you buy, the full list is in our guide to what is inside our 2026 calendars. That page carries a spoiler warning.
What counts as bourbon?
Bourbon is American whiskey made to a strict set of rules. It has to be made in the USA, from a recipe that is at least 51% corn, and matured in new charred oak barrels. The corn is what makes it sweet, and the new oak gives it vanilla and caramel.
- Straight bourbon has been matured for at least two years.
- Wheated bourbon uses wheat as its second grain.
- Rye whiskey is made from at least 51% rye, and is drier and spicier than bourbon.
- American single malt is made from malted barley, like a Scotch single malt, but in the USA.
A note on spelling. American and Irish distillers write whiskey with an e. Scotch, Japanese and Canadian distillers write whisky without one. We follow whichever spelling the distillery uses, which is why you will see both on our site.
Is it Kentucky bourbon?
Bourbon does not have to come from Kentucky, but most of it does. Five of the bourbons in the 12 Day American Whiskey Advent Calendar are Kentucky straight bourbons. The rest of the calendar travels further: there is a bourbon distilled in Indiana, rye whiskey from Texas and from New York, and a single malt from Oregon.
Which calendar for which bourbon drinker?
- They drink bourbon and little else: the 12 Day American Whiskey Advent Calendar. All twelve drams are American.
- You are not sure what they drink: the 12 Day Whiskey Advent Calendar. This is the one to choose when you are buying a present for someone who simply enjoys a good whiskey, wherever it comes from. Six bourbons sit alongside four Scotch whiskies and two Irish whiskeys, so there is something in it for everyone.
- They want to taste the whole world: the 25 Day Whiskey Advent Calendar, with eight American whiskeys among 25 drams from nine countries.
- They are a Scotch drinker at heart: the 12 Day Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar or the 25 Day Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar.
You can see all five in our whisky advent calendar collection.
A Christmas present for a bourbon lover
A 12 day calendar does not have to be opened before Christmas. Give it on Christmas Day and it is opened one dram a day through the twelve days of Christmas, right into the new year. It works out at £5.00 a dram.
If you are sending it as a present, enter the name and address of the person you are buying for at checkout, and use your own email address. That way any question about the delivery comes to you. Parcels to the USA carry the price on the customs paperwork.
Questions people ask
Can I get a bourbon advent calendar delivered in the USA?
Yes. We deliver to all 50 states and Washington DC in 3 to 7 working days. Delivery starts at $59.99 and includes all duties and taxes.
Will I have to pay customs charges when it arrives?
No. For the USA, duties and taxes are included in the delivery charge you pay at checkout.
Is there a bourbon advent calendar in the UK?
Yes. Our 12 Day American Whiskey Advent Calendar holds twelve American whiskeys, eight of them bourbon. It is £59.99 and UK delivery is free.
How many bourbons are in the calendar?
Eight. The other four drams are two rye whiskeys, a sour mash American whiskey and an American single malt.
Is every whiskey in it from Kentucky?
No. Five are Kentucky straight bourbons. The others come from elsewhere in the USA, including Indiana, Texas, New York and Oregon.
What is the difference between bourbon and American whiskey?
All bourbon is American whiskey, but not all American whiskey is bourbon. Bourbon must be at least 51% corn and matured in new charred oak. Rye whiskey, sour mash whiskey and American single malt follow different recipes.
How big is each dram?
Each one is 3cl, which is 30ml, or about one US fluid ounce. That is enough to taste it neat and again with a drop of water.
Does the bourbon calendar have tasting videos?
Yes. Every bottle has a QR code that opens a tasting video and written notes for that whiskey.
